World number one Rory McIlroy will join Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott at this year's Singapore Open, organisers have confirmed.
McIlroy: Adding to Asian itinerary
McIlroy, who won the BMW Championship on Sunday for his third victory in four outings on the US PGA Tour, has competed in it once before in 2008, a year after turning professional, finishing fourth.
Both Mickelson and Scott are regulars at the event, Scott having won it three times before in 2005, 2006 and 2010, and finishing third in 2007 and equal third in 2009. The prize money for the event, co-sanctioned by the
European and Asian Tours, stands at US$6 million, with a million-dollar incentive for the winner.
Before heading to Singapore, McIlroy and Mickelson will be on opposing teams in the Ryder Cup taking place in Chicago later this month. McIlroy's Asian trip will also see him take part in the BMW Masters in Shanghai and a one-day matchplay face-off against Tiger Woods elsewhere in China.
A field of 156 golfers, including 63 each from the European and Asian Tours, will compete at the Singapore Open, which is held on the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club. The event, which runs from November 8 to 11, started in 1961.
"I am delighted that the 2012 Barclays Singapore Open will once again welcome the world's best golfers. Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson are some of the most sought after players in the game and their presence will further enhance one of the world's premier tournaments," said Quek Suan Kiat, Country Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Barclays Bank PLC, Singapore.
"This year marks the 49th staging of the Singapore Open and thanks to Barclays and Sentosa everything is once again in place for Asia's showpiece golfing event," added Bob Tan, president of the Singapore Golf Association.
"The Singapore Golf Association are the guardians of our national Open and we are proud that it now ranks as one of the world's premier events."
