Seung-Yul Noh grabbed the first-round lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship, but Tiger Woods is only two off the pace.
The South Korean opened with a sensational nine-under-par 62 at TPC Boston, which meant that even though Woods posted his best opening round in three years, a seven-under 64, it was still two shots off the lead.
Chris Kirk shot a 63 to lie alone in second place, while Woods followed a shot back alongside Jeff OVerton and Ryan Moore.
Another big name, that of Rory McIlroy, is also lurking ominously. The Northern Irishman opened with a 65 to lie three back alongside Bryce Molder, with Louis Oosthuizen and John Senden a shot back on five under.
Two Englishmen - Luke Donald and Ian Poulter - lie on four under after opening 67s, while their countryman Lee Westwood started with a three-under 68.
Woods, who started on the 10th, picked up shots at the 11th and 13th and then carded six more birdies in succession from the 18th.
The former world number one dropped his only shot of the day on his closing hole, the ninth.
"I hit a lot of good shots and on top of that I putted well at the same time. It was a nice little combination," said Woods.
He added on PGA Tour Radio: "I hit the ball well enough to probably shoot maybe one or two more (under par). I missed a couple of little putts out there.
"But also I made my share from outside of 15, 20 feet as well."
Asked about his performance last week at The Barclays, where Woods three-putted four greens in the third round and then shot 76 in the final round to finish tied for 38th, he said: "It wasn't like I was hitting a lot of awful
shots. I just needed a couple of putts to kind of go my way and it didn't happen.
"Today was about the same as I have been playing pretty much all summer, just go out there and playing pretty consistent. It was just a nice, solid round."
McIlroy, meanwhile, lamented his poor driving on the day, which he reckons cost him quite a few shots.
"I definitely didn't drive the ball the way I wanted to," said McIlroy, who hit only four fairways.
"I drove it great last week at Bethpage and didn't putt so well but this week it seems like I didn't drive it so good today but putted well."
