Robert Garrigus carded his second 64 of the week to break the three-round scoring record at the RBC Canadian Open and take a one-shot lead heading into the final day.
Garrigus: Two 64s in three attempts
After shooting a 64 at the Hamilton Country Club on Thursday, the American added another six-under par round to the 66 he notched up on Friday as he rocketed to 16-under-par.
Garrigus' effort beats the previous record - held jointly by Arnold Palmer in 1955 and Dean Wilson in 2010 - by one stroke.
It's by this margin that the 34-year-old holds the tournament lead from William McGirt. The second round leader shot a more than respectable 66 to remain in the hunt for his second professional title.
McGirt admitted that the relaxed atmosphere created by his playing partners had aided his performance.
"I think I handled it pretty well," he said. "It did help playing with Robert and Scott (Piercy). We got out there and just had fun. We were laughing and joking all day."
A good thing too, as the trio will once again turn out together on Sunday after Piercy shot a 67 to claim third spot, two adrift of Garrigus.
A group of three players are bunched together on twelve-under-par, including last week's winner at the True South Classic, Scott Stallings, who is joined by Chris Kirk and Bo van Pelt.
Stallings and Kirk both fired blistering rounds of 63 to hurtle into contention. Kirk enjoyed an incredible run of seven birdies in eight holes from third while Stallings notched up six birdies and an eagle.
"Every time I hit a decent shot I'd have a 10-footer that was right edge up there, and kind of left myself in perfect position on the entire front nine," Kirk said of his round.
"It was a dream start," he added. "That front nine, everything was going right."
