John Mallinger moved into the lead in the Frys.com Open in California with a memorable day on the green, equaling the course record at CordeValle.
Mallinger: Record-equalling showing
The day before, Australian Nick O'Hern had achieved the same feat, but he slipped down the leaderboard as Mallinger hit a nine-under 62 to head the field by four.
Mallinger was bogey-free for his round, and also registered an eagle at the par-five 15th as well as seven birdies. He ended the day 14 under overall, ahead of compatriot Billy Horschel and Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas.
O'Hern, meanwhile, managed a level-par 71 leaving him nine under and equal fourth with Belgian Ryder Cup star Nicolas Colsaerts and USA's Scott Dunlap.
England's Greg Owen finished seven under overall and in a tie for ninth, three strokes ahead of Scotland's Russell Knox and defending champion Bryce Molder.
