Tiger Woods picked up his first birdie of the 2011 Presidents Cup as the United States looked to extend their 4-2 lead over the Internationals in Thursday's second round at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
Jason Day - his pairing is in front again
With all six groups out on this famed Sand Belt course, the Americans were leading in two of the fourball matches, including the headline match-up which saw Woods and Dustin Johnson playing the Australian duo of Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day.
Woods was aiming to bounce back from the 7 & 6 hiding he and Steve Stricker suffered in Thursday's foursomes against Adam Scott and KJ Choi, when the former World No 1 but now No 50 failed to register a single birdie.
The 14-time major winner's brilliant birdie putt at the fourth gave him and Johnson the early advantage today, moments after Jim Furyk's safe par putt at the third put him and Phil Mickelson ahead of Scott and KT Kim.
Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa were behind after both bogeyed the third while Webb Simpson was picking up a shot there, but the International pair then won the fourth to level proceedings.
The other battles also remained all square, with Geoff Ogilvy and Choi taking on Bill Haas and Nick Watney, Robert Allenby and YE Yang battling Matt Kuchar and Stricker, and Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel against Hunter Mahan and David Toms.
