The Englishman, and World No 1, is fighting it out with American Webb Simpson in Florida this week for the PGA tour money list title, and needs at least a top-two finish to have any chance of retaking the top spot.
He gave himself an excellent chance of doing just with his start at the Disney World Resort on Thursday, racing out to a six under par total after a string of six birdies in his opening 12 holes.
Currently at six under through 15 holes, he is tied for the lead with Arjun Atwal of India, who has also played 15 holes, and American James Driscoll, who has already reached the clubhouse.
Simpson, meanwhile, has started steadily, and is currently three under through 15 holes in a bogey-free round so far.
Simpson leads the money race by £229,000 at present.
