Sam Walker has booked his spot in the Open, but there was disappointment for Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal.
Montgomerie, who also fell just short at the US Open qualifying event four weeks ago, was left needing to hole a bunker shot on the final hole, which he was unable to do, closing with a level-par 70 after his first-round 66 had given him a great chance of making the cut.
Olazabal, Monty's successor as Ryder Cup captain, was on track to make it when he reached five under after 14 holes, but fell back to one under with rounds of 67 and 71.
Montgomerie was in no mood to comment after his round, but Olazabal said: "I made a great start, but then had too many putts and when I hit a bad shot on the 16th that was it.
"It's consistency - you have to do it for 18 holes four days in a row."
For Sam Walker, a 14-year long quest for qualification finally ended in success. He finished second behind James Morrison in the 96-man field.
Walker won on the Challenge Tour in Scotland on Sunday, flew back home and then set off at 5am in order to make his tee-off time.
"It's been a massive 24 hours for me - I should rush around more often," he said.
"I'm tired, but it feels amazing and it's going to be fantastic to play. It'll be one of the best things in my life."
Others who will join Walker and Morrison at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club from July 19-22 include Jamie Donaldson, Matthew Baldwin, Richard Finch, Alejandro Canizares and Marcus Fraser.
Some of the notables who missed out are Tom Lewis, Danny Willett, Matteo Manassero and Niclas Fasth.
