Luke Donald returned to the World No 1 spot with victory at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday.
The Englishman successfully defended his title at Wentworth, becoming only the third player - after Sir Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie - to win the European Tour's flagship event two years in a row.
His closing four-under-par 68 took his total to 15 under par, good enough for a four-stroke victory over fellow countryman Justin Rose, who had a 70, and Scot Paul Lawrie, who grabbed a share of second place with a superb final-round 66.
Ireland's Peter Lawrie (71) finished three shots further back in fourth, while South African Branden Grace (70) was another shot back in was fifth.
Donald was caught by Justin Rose four holes into his final round thanks in part to a bogey of his own, but didn't drop another shot after that and pulled away with five more birdies at the sixth, seventh, 10th, 12th and 16th.
It's the fourth time he moves to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking, taking back the position Rory McIlroy took from him back in March. This was also his first successful defence of a title.
"What a great one to do it at," he said. "This is our biggest event on The European Tour.
"To come and defend and get back to number one is very sweet indeed.
"I was just trying to keep my head down and plug away. I was swinging well and I've putted well all week.
"I just needed to settle down a bit. This is a big week and I felt some of the pressure.
"After the fourth I didn't give him (Rose) another hole where he was teeing off first other than the 18th. I got the job done.
"I take a great amount of satisfaction. It means I am doing the right things - the hard work is paying off and I have a great team around me."
Asked what was next on his wish list he said: "Obviously win Majors. I feel I am getting closer. Every time I win it adds to my confidence.
"These victories are key to bringing that confidence into the Majors."
