Matt Every carded a new course record nine-under-par 63 to take a three-shot lead after round one of the Valero Texas Open.
The 28-year-old American made hay while the sun shone at TPC San Antonio, rolling in nine birdies without a single blemish to break the previous course mark, held by Ryan Palmer and Scott Piercy in 2010.
"It was good," Every said. "Man, it was fun. I got a couple of breaks in the middle of the round to keep it going and I end up with 63."
Every likes to go out and play golf, not worrying too much about getting too technical, and he certainly did that on Thursday.
"I see the same guys tinkering with their swings, and they spend all day Tuesday and Wednesday practicing, and I think, 'God, I'm glad I'm not one of these guys,'" Every said. "And I'm sticking to that. When I get on the course, I'm more interested in playing golf than my golf swing."
Every leads Hunter Haas, who had a 66 and eagled the par-five 18th to secure second place, by three shots, while Fredrik Jacobson (68) is a further shot behind on five under.
A group of five players - Fredrik Jacobson, Cameron Beckman, Jason Gore, Troy Matteson and Derek Lamely - follow on four under.
Defending champion Brendan Steele endured a torrid day as he shot a 73, including double bogey at the par four fourth, as he failed to shake off his poor recent form.
Kevin Na, who memorably took 16 at the ninth last year, returned to par the hole but he could only muster an eight-over 79 to already be out of contention.
