Ernie Els's notoriously poor putting has once more been hugely costly to the big South African.
Ernie Els - his putting woes continue
This time it has robbed him of a victory he was looking set to pull off at the Transitions Championship at the Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead course in Florida.
And just as bad, it stopped him getting the World Ranking points he is so desperately seeking to qualify for next month's Masters in Georgia.
Leading by a shot and all set to make that two with a birdie at the 16th after hitting one of the longest and straightest drives on that hole all week and then riffling an approach shot to within five or six feet of the pin, Els inexplicably missed the putt - and was never the same force again.
From looking like a sure-fire winner, he bumbled his way out of victory with two closing bogies, the second on the 18th coming after he missed a four-foot putt that would have at least put him into the four-man play-off eventually won by the cooler, calmer and more patient Luke Donald.
In claiming his 5th victory in the US, Donald in the meantime, was able to end Rory McIlroy's two week stay at the top of the Rankings list and put himself back on top.
Els moved up six spots to 62nd in the world after his eventual fifth-place finish at the Transitions, but that was not nearly enough.
Only golf's top 50 will be invited to play Augusta but the former World No 1 and twice a runner-up there, can still make it back into the Masters by winning either the Arnold Palmer Invitational starting on Thursday or next week's Houston Open.
But he knows he might not get a better chance to win again this year than he had at Copperhead.
"It's going to be tough," he admitted. "I'm pretty hot (under the collar now) now and it's difficult to talk with a straight head here."
Compatriot Retief Goosen, who led after three rounds at Innisbrook, will also be disappointed that he slipped back to 20th on Sunday with a 75 and actually fell back a place in the rankings to 53rd.
This especially so as he won't get a second chance like Els to have a shot at the Green Jacket this year.
A top-10 finish would have put him into the top 50, but because he'll be having back treatment that couldn't wait these next two weeks, it won't be possible to improve upon his Rankings position.
In the meantime, France's 31-year-old Julien Quesne, who only started playing golf at 17, has never been happier - even though he too won't be going to Augusta National.
He was was Sunday's surprise, first-time winner of the European Tour's Andalucian Open and, as such, the previously invisible Frenchman has suddenly hoisted himself up the rankings from 322nd to 183rd - and is looking set to continue his climb in the coming months.
