Bernhard Langer has a three-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Senior Open Championship.
Berhard Langer: Has it all under control at the Senior Open
Langer carded a four-under-par 66 for the third round, which catapulted him to nine under par for the championship. Langer almost produced a flawless round.
However, a bogey at the par-three 14th ruined what was otherwise a brilliant afternoon. Langer started scoring on the par-four third hole and made additional birdies at the sixth and seventh holes. The
German veteran made up for his bogey with a couple of birdies on the stretch home.
It is actually quite bizarre, as Langer has made birdie at the 15th and 17th holes all week. Chances are he might continue that trend on Sunday.
South African David Frost is on six under par for the championship. Frost, who eventually carded a two-under-par 68 for the third round, made several critical errors on the back nine, which probably cost him a place at the top of the leaderboard.
The South African was actually flawless on the front nine, where he carded three consecutive birdies just before making the turn. That momentum was stalled somewhat, when he bogeyed the tenth and 14th holes.
While Frost pulled two shots back, he then went on to bogey the 18th. Consistency or the lack thereof cost the South African tremendously on Saturday.
Mark Wiebe is one shot behind Frost but he honestly produced an ordinary round. Wiebe's day did not start very well, as he made bogey at the first. The American followed that up with bogey at the par-four eighth.
While the American pulled those two shots back, he wasn't able create any meaningful momentum on Saturday. Scotland's Sandy Lyle is six shots behind the leader after Saturday's third round. However, this is links golf and he too will be confident of a comeback on Sunday.
Lyle carded consecutive birdies at 14 and 15. In addition he made birdie at the par-four second. However, two dropped shots ruined his day. Joining Lyle on three under par are Gene Sauers and Peter Fowler.
